There are many sports a person can play. Some help with certain physical fitness aspects such as cardiovascular endurance and muscle endurance. Other sports help maintain the body's flexibility and muscle strength. These are the sports we do and a little about them.



Diving: (Chelaine)

Diving is also known as springboard diving. Looking for a safer way to practice gymnastics tricks, acrobatics began practicing their skills over water during the 17th century. Diving was popularized by Sweden and Germany during the 18th and 19th centuries. Official competitive diving began in Britain in the 1880's. It became an Olympic Sport in the 1908 Olympics.

There are different events: 1/3 meter springboard, 5/7/10 meter platform and the synchronized events on the 3/10 meter heights, as shown in the following picture.

The diving system has generally gone unchanged since 1928. The synchronized diving event was added in 2000. The USA was the dominate contender in international diving, until China began participating in the 1980's. These two countries have been the main contenders for the top three places in diving, in both men and women's diving.

There are five categories in diving: fowards, backwards, inwards, reverse, and twisting. Many of these tricks can be performed in either the tuck, pike, straight, or free position. Based on the amount of flips, twists, and body position, the dive is given a degree of difficulty. Judges give scores based on the boardwork preceeding the dive, the dive execution, and the entry (smallest splash possible).

Famous Athletes: Greg Louganis of the United States of America

Louganis injured himself during the 1988 Olympics in competition, attempting to complete a reverse 2 1/2 sommersault in the pike position. After getting stitches on his head, he came back and won the two other diving events. He is considered by many as the best diver in history.

Paddling:

This year I paddled for Punahou and it was really fun. The ILH season has six races ranging from three to six miles. In a canoe, there are five paddlers and one steersman. Paddling can be hard at times, but it is a good workout and a great way to stay fit and in shape. You can learn many different qualities from paddling. Teamwork is an important quality that is necessary. There is no way a paddling crew can achieve success if they do not work as a team. You also learn how important it is to stay positive and never give up. Paddling is a really fun sport and I have made many close friends because of it. I encourage anyone who is interested in the sport to try it.

Track and Field:

Track and field is a sport that everyone should try because there are so many different events. Anyone can find an event that they are good at or like. There are many different running events. The shortest running event is the 100 meter dash (one straightaway of the track) and the longest is the 3000 meters (about two miles). There are also numerous field events such as long/triple jump, high jump, shot put/discus, and pole vault. Track meets are about every weekend and, in my opinion, the best part of track and field. Track is another way to meet nice people and become friends with people who you might not have known otherwise.

Tennis:

I love playing tennis. It is really a lifetime sport. I have so much fun playing tennis with my family. My dad plays in tournaments with his brother and cousins. He has so much fun. Meanwhile he can exercise and keep in shape. Tennis is really great because you can play singles or doubles. And you can always spice the game up by doing different activities.

The picture farthest to the left is the #1 tennis player in the world. His name is Roger Federer. I have seen him play on TV. He is really good. He can cover the cournt so well and he has a terrific forehand.

The second picture is of Andy Roddick. His plays for the United States. He has one of the fastest serves in the game. My sister actually saw him play at UCLA. She was so speechless she asked the man who gave out tickets, "You mean the one that dated Mandy Moore?" The man answered, "Yes, that's the one." She said it was a great experience and she saw him serve like 141 miles per hour.

The last picture is Maria Sharapova. At the end of 2006, she was the highest paid female athlete. She is only 20 years and 6'2''. She is a very good tennis player and plays for Russia. She is also very good. She won two Grand Slam titles, US Open, and Wimbledon.
